Groups for Children & Young People

1st  Weare Guides

Guiding Logo Weare School Monday evening
6.30 – 8.00pm. (term time only)

The joining age is 10, guides stay with the unit for four years, achieving yearly challenge badges – the older guides are encouraged to achieve their Baden Powell Challenge Badge before going on to Rangers.  Currently 28 girls attend weekly – and a waiting list is currently in operation.

All Guides whatever age work together in small groups and are encouraged to think for themselves and make their own decisions.  They have a balanced and varied programme, caring for the individual and share a commitment to a common standard.

GuidesWithin this framework the girls are given opportunities to have fun, learn new skills, interact with others, enjoy the outdoors and undertake exciting and challenging activities.

The programme during 2008 has included themed evenings, craft events, cooking outdoors,  helping in the Community, tobogganing, rafting and canoeing, team building, camp preparation, Go for It experiences and Interest badges not forgetting our annual camp and the Big Gig Pop Concert. Supporting the Macmillan Coffee morning had Guides (and Guiders) abseiling down Cheddar Gorge there is always something ‘going on’.

"I’m new at Guides and I think it is great!  I have fun meeting new people and making friends.  Everybody is really nice and it’s impossible to feel lonely because there is always someone to go and talk to.   We do loads of different activities, like go-karting, canoeing and we get to go to a music concert called the ‘Big Gig’ which is a ‘guides only’ event.   I think guides is a great place to learn new things and just have fun."  RO

Helpers!
Guiding units in the Axbridge District are always on the look out for more adult help. If you are interested in helping regularly or just every now and then in any way please do contact us. This is the case for all age groups – Rainbows (5-7), Brownies (7-10) and Guides (10-14). We really appreciate all the support we receive from parents/helpers and this can come in all forms – helping test badges or at a meeting if we are short of an adult, transporting girls to a different venue for a meeting or more specialist things such as helping keep unit accounts. This all helps us to run the units more smoothly around our own busy lives! If you are interested please contact Ros. Prince (01934 710261),  Juliet Dormer 1st Weare Brownies (01934 741875) or Annette Bowle (01278 787189), Axbridge District Commissioner.

gIn September 2009 Girlguiding UK will launch its Centenary celebrations.  We want you to help make it a truly memorable occasion.  Commemorating an event as special as out 100th birthday, however, calls for more than just cakes and balloons – in true guiding fashion it calls for a challenge!

GuidesSo we’ve came up with Changing the World -  Guides have been given the opportunity to support National, International or Global Projects – opportunities to take action, memorable ways to channel the spirit of guiding – and change the world.

Ist Weare Guides have decided to support three projects:  Book Aid International:  Helping to bring free books to people living in some of the poorest places in the world.  One Planet Challenge (World Wildlife Fund):  Helping to build a future in which people live in harmony with Nature -  and Help the Hospices:  Supporting hospices who care for people coming to the end of their lives – and helping their loved ones.

Many of the activities planned will be carried out within the local Community throughout 2009 -  We hope we can count on your support.

Just think, guiding started by only a handful of girls who spoke out.  What can Guiding achieve today with 580,000 members all taking action to change the world?

brownies hard at work1st Weare Brownies is a full thriving pack with 24 girls currently enjoying a varied programme of activities, crafts, games, badges and lots more! Recently we have taken part in our own Brownie Olympics, Mexican theme evening and treasure hunts as well as working towards and gaining Entertainment, Number Fun, Out and About and a variety of other interest badges. The Brownies take part in activities with other groups during the year and get the chance to meet the other Brownies in the district at a number of events, for example a Masquerade Ball for the district Brownie Revels at Wedmore.

brownies having fun1st Weare Brownies are in the fortunate position of having a full pack of 24 girls and an extensive waiting list, several of whom are 7 and ready to start as soon as a space becomes available. If you would like your daughter to attend Brownies once she is 7 we would recommend putting her name down on the waiting list as soon as possible (however young), please do not wait until she is 6-7 years old. Due to the long list we allocate spaces to those who have been on the list longest and occasionally this does mean that a girl is not able to start until she is 8 or older. If you would like to add your daughter to the list please contact me and hopefully we will be able to get her in to join in our fun soon after turning 7!

Quest Club

Quest is a club for school children up to the age of 12, though older children often come back to help, as this can count towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

We meet every Friday at Holly Tree Farm, Stone Allerton from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

It is difficult to define Quest, as it is not a Sunday School but does have close connections with the Church in Allerton where the children are expected to come to the Family Service on the first Sunday of the month.

At Quest the children play games, paint, colour, make things, eat sweets and put on the nativity play at Christmas.

If you are interested, want to know more or would like your child/children to come to Quest, then just give Jane a call on 01934 712642

Allerton Youth Club

The Allerton Youth Club is open to any youngster living in the Allerton area age 11 to 16.

In the Autumn & Winter terms we meet in the Old School Room in Stone Allerton and as there is limited space you need to join sooner rather than later!

After Easter we are on the cricket field so the more the merrier!

We have a variety of activities and a summer camp.

If you are interested please contact Nina Reading 01934 712692 or Di Babbington 01934 733468
