The Allerton Womens' Institute
Now & Then
Allerton Women’s Institute was founded in 1949 and is part of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes.
Allerton WI is an active group at the heart of our community and we extend a warm welcome to anyone to come along to one of our meetings to see what we do and how much fun we have.
We are a friendly and enthusiastic group of women of all ages who meet at 7.30pm on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the Old Schoolroom at Stone Allerton. The meetings are open to everyone irrespective of age or gender!! During the year we also arrange some trip to places of interest; the last being to the Bristol Blue Glass factory which was fascinating.
The main draw of each meeting is our Speaker’s Session when we are entertained to a series of informative, often illustrated talks and demonstrations on a variety of topics, mostly chosen or requested by our own members – and we always include time for refreshments and a chat after a short business session. One of the highlights of our year is our lively Christmas Party held at a local pub or restaurant.
As Members of the Somerset Federation of WI’s we also join other WI’s at events organized across the County. In 2013 some of our members chose to visit a Cheese making farm as well as Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Station and we attended Cookery Demonstrations. We also take part in the County Skittles Knock-out Tournament. So there is plenty on offer to suit all interests.
We also organize and cook for the popular monthly Village Lunches held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month which are enjoyed by WI members and non-members alike.
In 2014 we had our 65th Birthday Year with an exciting Programme of events. In addition to our monthly meetings we arranged a variety of events such as Coffee mornings, IT & other interest Workshops, Theatre & Film Visits, Skittles evenings, Garden visits and much more.
The current programme is on the website
The WI is such a good way to meet new friends and find new interests and skills. We might be best known for making jam and singing Jerusalem but we also do so much more and have plenty of fun in the process. We do have a yearly Membership fee, but a first ‘Taster Evening’ will be free!
