NWatch Alert - Bogus Council Tax Calls

Neighbourhood police officers in Sedgemoor have received complaints about bogus claims that home owners could be entitled to council tax reductions.

The complaints relate to unsolicited phone calls and cold callers in the Sedgemoor area by people claiming they can offer reductions in council tax as part of a scheme operated on behalf of the government and Sedgemoor District Council. They claim that for a one-off fee they can reassess housing bands which could result in homeowners qualifying for lower council tax.

We have spoken to the council and they do not support the claims which are believed to be bogus.

Sergeant Ian Kennett said: "Unfortunately people use this type of activity to target the vulnerable people in our communities and we will take all reports we receive very seriously."

Remember always to report suspicious activity, vehicles, persons direct to the police on 101.
